Rimini among the top 15 eco-green cities in Italy

Rimini bounced up to 14th place, achieving its "personal best" in the rankings of Italy's most eco-friendly towns and cities

This important result was announced in the urban ecosystem rankings published by the "Il Sole 24 Ore" newspaper

Rimini bounced up to 14th place, achieving its "personal best" in the rankings of Italy's most eco-friendly towns and cities. The survey, run by Legambiente and published today by "Il Sole 24 Ore", offers a snapshot of the environmental performance of the 104 Italian provincial capitals using 18 indicators. This leap forwards – last year Rimini took 23rd place - confirms that the city is making serious efforts to improve its performance. It was 31st in 2014, 33rd in 2015, 32nd in 2016, 29th in 2017 and 16th in 2018 - a trend which has seen considerable improvement over the situation ten years ago, when the city was in 50th place.

The figures

The “Environment” category gives the most positive results, especially when it comes to the city's trees (12th place in all Italy) with almost 33 trees per 100 residents, total pedestrian areas (8th, with 0.985 sq.m. per resident), and also the efficient use of space (16th) and thermal solar and photovoltaic energy (22nd place) amounting to 7.154 kW per resident.
But the city also performed well in the category “Mobility”, with Rimini at 26th place for its cycle paths, 16th for public transport, 22nd for passenger transport, 28th for the number of cars (61.344 cars per 100 residents). However, as a tourist destination it didn't do well in the traffic accident ratings (99th place), although the accident rate is decreasing, both in number of incidents and number of injuries .
One negative data point was the city's production of municipal waste, placing Rimini at 101th place, while, staying in the “Waste” category, the city took 32nd place for sorted waste management (68.8%, just a step from the 70% milestone).

Air quality measurements (PM10), show that Rimini has a moderate annual concentration of 29.50 ug/mc (well below the 40 ug/mc limit), a better result than many other towns in the Po Delta region. As for “Water”, the data collected by Legambiente show that the city is careful to maintain its water resources, especially in relation to leaks from its municipal water network (28th place), along with its purification capacity (95%) and household water consumption, which places us in 48th place.

“The Legambiente - Il Sole 24 Ore rankings effectively confirm the many advances made in recent years, especially in terms of urban mobility (bicycle, pedestrian and public transport), - says City Councillor for the Environment Anna Montini – and our urban green infrastructure which in 2019 did not yet reflect the large urban regeneration projects we are building along our sea front. The public thermal solar and photovoltaic energy data are also very good, a clear confirmation of the Town Council's strategy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions.”
