Sustainability and the risk of greenwashing

What is it? How can we protect ourselves? A reliable certification in this respect is ISO 14001

A growing awareness of environmental issues and an increasing focus on consumers’ecological footprint, are pushing luxury brands to adopt policies to reduce the environmental impact of their products.

Eco-packaging is a trend to which some of the world’s most representative brands have already adhered, taking steps to obtain certifications that meet the demand for greater transparency on the part of consumers, who are increasingly informed about the official documentation of the recyclability of materials.

The most popular global certifications are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes), which attest to the use of forestry materials from sustainably managed forests and plantations for product manufacture.

As is often the case, all that glisters is not gold: there is increasing talk of greenwashing What is it? How can we protect ourselves? This is a practice used by companies that deceive the consumer through false claims by declaring themselves sustainable, when really they are not. A reliable certification in this respect is ISO 14001, a voluntary international standard, applicable to any type of public or private organisation, which specifies the requirements of an environmental management system.

Sustainability therefore becomes one of the main catalysts for development, also in terms of environmental and energy performance of the production sites. To this effect, Scrigno has established an Environmental Management System in accordance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard, currently pending certification, while also adopting a risk-based thinking system. As confirmation of the Company's sensitivity to principles of Circular Economy, processes have been reorganised to monitor and reduce primary material and packaging consumption, waste and increase energy efficiency.

SCRIGNO is a company that produces, so we are aware that our economic activities have repercussions on the environment, but we are also a responsible company, with our eyes set on the future. This is why we have also chosen to commit to ensuring the long-term development of our company respects nature and the well-being of people. In line with this commitment, at the start of the year we appointed an Environmental Manager, tasked with working with management to develop and implement the SCRIGNO Sustainability Plan. This orientation is palpable in all areas of company life, resulting in numerous projects. Innovation, a reduction in environmental impact, safeguarding of resources and initiatives in favour of the community and inclusion are the key elements on the journey to integrate ESG criteria into our organisation. We are a solid and well-structured company. We have reaped the benefits of our management style, even in a year as tough as 2020, during which we chose to implement a growth plan for internal lines, with investments in innovation, including over half a million euros for sustainability.

A philosophy which, in line with the new mission of “producing excellent opening systems that make people's lives more comfortable and contribute towards living comfort”, is concretely pursued with the achievement of increasingly high production standards. These are the results of a process combining research with the use of the best materials and application of the most advanced technologies. In detail, the drive to reach the highest levels of excellence is confirmed by our very own Smart Factory transformation and the adoption of the lean method, in order to cut cycle times and triple production capacity. In detail, a new frame packaging plant has been recently inaugurated at Scrigno facilities 2 and 3 in Savignano sul Rubicone, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, respectively dedicated to the fulfilment of 96% of total production of standard sizes and custom systems, for 7 million semi-finished products in total. The system, which will be further reinforced during the year, integrates robotic and anthropomorphised devices and an automatic frame transfer solution, with state-of-the-art factory management software.

A virtuous approach to the business world must also embrace reflection on social innovation, as a strategy which aims to combine the capacity to evolve and managerial spirit, with the resources of other actors. The aim is to find original solutions to social-environmental challenges, with the development of alliances and original business lines.

This awareness has given rise to numerous initiatives promoted by Scrigno, in which the commitment and talent of people is enhanced with purposes of an ethical nature. “A door on a better world” is particularly worthy of mention in this sense, pursued in partnership with YACademy, Academy of international architecture and Mario Cucinella, one of the most important contemporary interpreters of eco-sustainable architecture. An experiential laboratory which in addition to stimulating students in the creation of a work that will be installed in the ArteSella park of contemporary art, looks to future generations, finding its concrete expression in the environmental requalification of an area with a high level of criticality, by participating in its replanting. Lastly, OpenToMe is another significant project which celebrates diversity through the experience of authentic people with the courage to follow their dreams with determination, becoming an example for the community.

Sustainability and community are inseparably bound together in the promotion of a kind of growth which considers attention to the environment and principles of responsibility as long-term competitive edges. Never before have these values been so necessary: as a leading company in one of the sectors that is reacting the fastest to global challenges, we are ready to make our contribution towards the relaunch of Italian industry.
